It seems to me that the two of you need to figure out where the limits are. When he begs he'll promise all sorts of things, but the two of you need to know what happens when you get to a difficult point, what to do if he again decides he can't go on with the arrangement. One solution is have some way you have absolute control over him, but perhaps the best thing is to see what he says.
